The Medi-Jet "Hypospray"
The Medi-Jet High pressure injector. I've been collecting odd / macabre / weird things for a few years now and thought I'd share some of the items from my collection. Starting with this. Introduced in the 80's and used primarily overseas by the US goverment to eradicate small pox, the medi-jet high pressure injector was a futuristically designed solution to innoculation. It used a high powered injecting syringe to force medication through the epidermis instead of the traditional hypodermic needle, which puntures the skin. They were phased out because of their tendancy to break, their regular service intervals and the fact that they had to be stripped and autoclaved after every use. They were also noted for passing Hep B onto people if not cleaned correctly, which is worrying because i jabbed myself on the needle while taking these photos. Yay... This version is still fully functional which is suprising because they are normally rendered inoperable prior to sale. I'm yet to find someone willing to let me test it on them though. It's one of my favourte items, because of its somewhat dubious past and that fact it looks like a weapon from a cheap sci-fi movie. The medication container was suspended above the needle shown in the picture. The needle served two purposes - To puncture the foil on the top of the container and to draw medicaton into the chamber, where it would then be forced into the skin of the person with the help of a co2 container concealed in the handle. Medical equipment like this is now commonly seen in movies and TV shows. Their limitations and high purchase cost don't make them viable for wide spread use Complete - ![]() Broken down into its core compenents for cleaning and servicing purposes - ![]() More information - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_injector http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/brou...y.aspx?id=5313 |

Re: The Medi-Jet "Hypospray"
I have to take pause with the 1980's timeframe. Perhaps this unit originated around that time, but similar units existed prior to this for mass innoculations. There is an iconic news photograph taken during the 1950's with a little boy with a freaked out expression being vaccinated against polio or smallpox, not sure which with a similar device. Either way, really neat and impressively made piece of equipment and engineering that I'm sure anyone would be impressed with. I had a bolt gun that I bought from an estate sale that was used to euthenize cattle. Beautifully made and machined, but equally odd. I sold it to a prop house for some big bucks. That industry will buy things like this for good money you'd never see on an auction. |
