It's true. That's the picture of Anatoli Petrovich Bugorski. Check him in Wikipedia. He survived and kept working despite the serious consequences of the accident. Everything immediately around the path of the beam was burned beyond recovery, flesh, nerves, bone. There's an interview with complete details but I don't know where exactly. It's relatively recent. The accident occurred in 1978 but it was buried due to the strict soviet policy of the time about science projects. That contributed to Bugorski's health problems because his case was unique and the only way to treat something like that in time is to have diversity. He was sent to an hospital where the doctors expected to see him die while they study the consequences of a radiation accident. Bugorski survived to their surprise. It's considered that less than 10 grays of radiation are enough to kill a human. Bugorski took between 2000 and 3000 grays. |
