Man Encounters Great White Shark After Dive

Man Fights Off Great White Shark In Sydney Harbour

A video filmed with GoPro appears to show a man fighting off a great white shark in Sydney Harbour in Australia.

The video shows a man walking outside a railing and leaping into the water off a rock.

He then swims underwater but meets the shark.

The shark comes at him as the man frantically swims away, and then he tries to bat at it, somehow succeeding in not becoming its prey.

It’s unclear when the video was taken.

The man who uploaded the video, Terry Tufferson, says that it was a “close call.”

“HOLY [expleitve]!” he said.

Viewers were unsure about the footage, which was blowing up online.

“If this real, This is an awesome video both being cool footage but also showing Sharks aren’t as evil as most people make em out to be and have no real interest in eating us,” one person said.

“However it is truly hard to believe this is real mostly for the scream underwater, Of course i’m not saying you wouldn’t scream but just something about it seemed really well.. Unnatural.”

“Thats stock standard footage of a shark. lol. Good editing though,” added another.

Re: Man Encounters Great White Shark After Dive

Because the six foot high spiked fence with a corner guard was for everyone else. What a dickhead.

Re: Man Encounters Great White Shark After Dive

Seems kinda fake to me (added in bits of shark footage in between the splashing).

Re: Man Encounters Great White Shark After Dive

He did exactly the right thing. Make eye contact with the shark, and keep it in forward view.

Not that I'm an expert on Marine Biology or Great White Sharks.

Re: Man Encounters Great White Shark After Dive

Plausible but I'm not sure. Seems like it's easy not to get eaten as long as the shark sees you're not a seal.

Did I miss the part where he had to fight it off? The shark barely paid any attention to him, let alone touch him

Re: Man Encounters Great White Shark After Dive

We have seen an increase in GWs here in the gulf coast for some time, which is suppose to be rare.
SARASOTA, FLA. -- Last August, Dr. Bob Hueter, Director of the Center for Shark Research at Mote Marine Laboratory, worked with a team of scientist from Ocearch to tag great white sharks off the coast of Cape Cod. Once tagged, every time the shark's dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water, it transmits a signal and provides the location of the shark.
“Really it is the kind of thing we dreamed about doing as shark biologist 15 years ago that now has come to reality,” said Dr. Hueter.
Anyone can log onto Ocearch.org and see where sharks, like the 14 foot, 2,300 pound, great white named Kathrine, have been swimming.
“It is real science and it is in real time.”
Thanks to pings from Katharine’s tags, we know she has been hanging out in the Gulf of Mexico. On Wednesday she was about a hundred and forty miles off the coast of Sarasota and her fin broke the surface of the water three times.
“This is just revealing what has always been there,” said Dr. Hueter. “It doesn’t change the odds of them coming in to the beach or certainly the odds of them bothering a swimmer.”
Katherine is not the only white shark being tracked in the Gulf. Betsy, a 12 foot, 1,400 pound great white shark tagged in Cape Cod, is also swimming in the Gulf of Mexico this summer.
“We typically thought of them being out there more in the winter time, so this is kind of a surprise to biologist,” said Dr. Hueter.
Dr. Hueter says because of the tracking program, scientist are now learning valuable information about the great white sharks range, habits and how to protect them.
“In the case of the white sharks, we are talking about a species that needs protection,” he says.
There is no denying the fact that there are lots of sharks in the water around Florida, but shark attacks are relatively rare if you look at the statistics, and most sharks, including Betsy and Katherine, go out of their way to avoid humans.

Re: Man Encounters Great White Shark After Dive

Perhaps it was a little known subspecies of the Great White shark.

The not-so-great white shark.

Or possibly...a faked 'encounter'.
