The man with a tank in his garden

15 February 2011

Where do ex-Ministry of Defence equipment and vehicles go when they are no longer required?

Some of it gets a second life in the hands of enthusiasts like Shaun Mitchell, who restores old vehicles in his garden and drives them around the streets of Norfolk.

He told the BBC why he enjoys this unusual hobby.

Re: For the Love of Tanks.

There's just 1 picture. The description says the main difference is the engine. As an afterthought ERA can be applied post delivery so isn't a good way of idenitfying which model it is. I found a site with that picture used for the T-80ud which is the export model.
It IS a T-80UD, and the only visible difference between the others is the UD has smoke mortar tubes.

Re: For the Love of Tanks.

I wonder if that's the same guy that used to drive a bright yellow Abbot light tank around.

Re: For the Love of Tanks.

Come on people, no one has quessed those last 2 i posted. Here's a hint. The black and white picture was taken around WW2 and designed by a country on the side that won.
The second one is older than the M1 Abrams but younger than the Chieftan.

Re: For the Love of Tanks.

Ok i'll tell you losers, the 1st one is a Sentinel - made in Australia, not too many were made.
The 2nd one is the XM-803 a joint project between the germans and americans. The MBT-70 project was scraped because of costs and because the americans didn't want to use the superior 120mm canon.........which they used on the Abrams M1-A2 anyway.
