They used all 3... Twitter, Facebook and BB messaging, ones who can be traced are meant to be the first targets....whoever had the bright idea of confirming BB can't be traced for the papers to print and basically give them a safe way to organize shit is stupid.

Re: London Riots Start To Spread Across England (6-10th August 2011)

Blackberry Maker to Aid London Police in Riot Probe
LONDON – Following days of rioting in London that have already led to one death -- riots planned and coordinated over mobile phones and instant messages -- the manufacturer of the Blackberry handheld has promised to help London police in any way it can.

Police investigating the extraordinary escalation of London's rioting and disorder, which continued for a third night Tuesday -- believe that the BlackBerry cell phone played a vital role in coordinating the riots. Patrick Spence, managing director at Research in Motion (RIM), told the Guardian the company had reached out to police to offer its aid, potentially turning over messages and helping track down rioters.

"We feel for those impacted by the riots in London," Spence told the Guardian. "We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can," he added. The company complies with a UK bill called the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, which may force it to cooperate with officials by intercepting and handing over relevant communications.

A 26-year-old man who was shot in a car during riots Monday in south London's Croydon district died in the hospital Tuesday, in what was the first fatality during three days of unrest. The circumstances of the incident were unclear, police said.

But one thing is clear: A private, instant messaging service on the Blackberry network which enables free, virtually instantaneous access to other owners has been used to fuel and spread the riots since Saturday, officials claim.

Users of Blackberry Messenger (BBM), which has replaced text messaging among young people, have posted messages inciting violence and identifying meeting points for future uprisings.

As messages can be passed to hundreds of users in minutes, the technology appeared to have been used to reach disparate groups of youths across the capital.

Police have said that much of the violence was planned using social networking sites and BBM, although many of the messages are unverified. While detectives have vowed to track down those who incite violence on the Internet, BBM messages are encrypted and cannot be easily traced by the authorities.

One youth worker told The (London) Times, "People have been talking on BBM all day deciding where they'd go next. They said Peckham would take the next hit. The stuff in Brixton, people used BBM to organize where to meet."

Alleged drug dealer Mark Duggan, whose shooting by police sparked the initial disturbances on Saturday night, used BBM to send a final message to his girlfriend. He wrote, "The Feds are following me."

After Saturday's unrest at Tottenham, north London, one widely circulated BBM message read, "Everyone in edmanton enfield wood green everywhere in north link up at enfield town station at 4 o clock sharp!!!"

RIM did not immediately respond to FoxNews.com requests for more information. But experts told the Wall Street Journal that it was unfair to single out the BBM service for its role.

"Certainly, it's a lot easier for people to communicate with each other in real time via some of these services but that's a fact of life," Ian Maude, an analyst at Enders Analysis, told the Journal. "They're not good or evil in themselves, its the purposes for which people use them."

Users intent on disorder appeared Monday night to be changing tactics in order to avoid detection. One BBM message was circulated which warned people to get off the network.

Meanwhile, Twitter users who have used the Internet site to incite violence will be prosecuted, the Metropolitan Police warned.

Police have arrested a 16-year old boy in Glasgow, for allegedly using Facebook in an attempt to stir up trouble in what is Scotland’s largest city.

Strathclyde police has confirmed it has detained a youth following a raid on a property today in the south of Glasgow.

A post had appeared on Facebook, inviting people to follow the rioting and looting that has been blighting London and other English cities in recent days. The Facebook member, thought to be from Cessnock, in the south of the city, had claimed in a follow-up message that he had become “the most hated man in Glasgow”, for setting up a page called “Glasgow Riot Friday 12th August 2011″ yesterday evening.

As the Guardian reports, he had been using the name Zander McQuarrie on Twitter, and had described himself as “sweet sixteen, from CESSNOCK [sic], love watchin the rangers, love goin to the hamilton games and fighting with the other mobs!!!!!!!”

Fiona Taylor, a Chief Constable with Strathclyde Police, said:

“This detention shows that we are monitoring the situation closely and we will take decisive action to prevent anyone inciting violence of any kind in Glasgow or anywhere else in the force area. Communities in London and other cities in England have been outraged at the disgraceful scenes of destruction and looting that they have witnessed, and we are sure that communities here would be just as horrified to think that anyone was trying to incite similar acts of mindless criminality. The action we took today should act as a strong warning to anyone who is thinking of causing trouble here.”

Whilst Strathclyde police said it had no knowledge of any planned trouble in the region, it was still monitoring the situation, and a police officer from Starthclyde Police suggested that they were watching social networking websites given the role they have seemingly played in mobilizing and organizing rioters on the ground elsewhere.

And it turns out that Wigan Police have also arrested a man on suspicion of inciting disorder using social media, with Greater Manchester Police tweeting this message earlier:

even 14 yo's have been seen joining the riots.

Re: London Riots Start To Spread Across England (6-10th August 2011)

Londoners are taking to the social networks to mobilise a clean-up operation after the third night of rioting and looting.

"Artist, writer, photographer and explorer" Dan Thompson started the Twitter hashtag #riotcleanup late last night after watching news reports from his home on the Sussex coast. He told Wired.co.uk that he has been up all night co-ordinating clear-up operations, letting people know where to head if they want to help; and also relaying requests from local business owners who need support clearing debris.

Thompson added that the first person to volunteer was musician Kate Nash and the overall response has been "phenomenal". He said: "Teams of volunteers have been out since the early hours and we are already getting responses back saying that areas are clear."

The creation of the #riotcleanup hashtag, along with others including #riotwombles, # liverpoolcleanup and #solidarity, was followed by the launch of the Twitter account @Riotcleanup. Instigated by Sam Duckworth, the founder of the Facebook group Get Cape, it now has 28,378 followers.

Over on Facebook, a page has been created called "Post riot clean-up: let's help London" where, much like on Twitter, people armed with brushes and bin bags, are co-ordinating meet-ups. And there are also pages calling for support for the Police and pages co-ordinating clean-ups in specific areas.

People, including actor and comedian Simon Pegg, have also been referencing the Riot Cleanup website, which was immediately inundated and suspended by its hosting company, 34SP.com. The hosting company has confirmed that it has now found "a more powerful hosting solution" and the website is back online.

But the social networks are also being used to vent anger with two sites launched already to name and shame the looters. Using the vast amount of video footage and photographs that people have captured whilst out on the streets, or simply trying to get home -- members of the public are being asked to identify looters.

Metropolitan Police officers are now trawling social networks for photographs of looters or for looters boasting about their hauls, but they are also urging members of the public to send images and footage in. They are posting them online to their Flickr account.

Operation Withern is investigating the serious disorder and violence that has been affecting parts of London. Today (Tuesday 9 August) we are releasing the first of many images of suspects.

Operation Withern's priority is to bring to justice those who have committed violent and criminal acts.

As the detailed and thorough investigation progresses we will be issuing photographs of suspects, like those of alleged looters we are releasing today (Tuesday 9 August).

These CCTV images are from incidents of looting in Croydon over last night and in Norwood Road SE27 in the early hours of this morning.

If anyone recognises individuals in the photographs or has any information about the violence and disorder that has occurred they should contact the Major Investigation Team on 020 8345 4142.

Alternatively anyone can report crime and provide information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Re: London Riots Start To Spread Across England (6-10th August 2011)

A Twitter user has posted a picture of an alleged thief sat in front a pile of electronics, games and other swag looted during the weekend's riots in London.

The tweet reads: "He doesn't look too upset about Duggan. He is a thief, and I'm sure @Twitter can identify him #Tottenham #Enfield".

It has been retweeted more than 700 times since its posting yesterday and has begun to go viral across the social network.

The picture shows a rather happy looking looter posing in front of a pile of games and electronics hardware.

These include titles like Little Big Planet, Just Cause 2, Prototype and the Transformers movie. He has also acquired what looks like several tubs of Body Shop mango body butter.
