Rioter is first to be given eviction notice
12 August 2011

A council tenant whose son has appeared in court charged in connection with Monday night's disturbances in Clapham Junction has been served with an eviction notice, Wandsworth Council has said.

The tenant is believed to be the first in the country to be facing the prospect of losing their council-owned home as a result of the rioting and looting.

The notice is the first stage in the legal process of eviction. The notice gives warning that the council will be seeking possession of the property and that an application will be made to the courts seeking the tenant's eviction. The final decision will rest with a judge sitting at the county court.

Neither the tenant nor their son can be named at this stage for legal reasons.

Wandsworth Council has acted immediately in the wake of local magistrates courts hearings to instigate tough action against tenants or members of their households who were directly involved in the disturbances.

Council leader Ravi Govindia welcomed the swift action by the housing department and added: "In Wandsworth we are determined to take the strongest possible action against any tenant or member of their household responsible for the truly shocking behaviour perpetrated on local homes and businesses earlier this week.

"This council will do its utmost to ensure that those who are responsible pay a proper price for their conduct. Ultimately this could lead to eviction from their homes. Our officers will continue to work with the courts to establish the identities of other council tenants or members of their households as more cases are processed in the coming days and weeks."

Govindia continued: "Most residents on our housing estates are decent law-abiding citizens who will have been sickened at the scenes they witnessed on their TV screens this week. Many will have seen their places of work trashed at the hands of these rioters. As much as anything else we owe it to them to send out a strong signal that this kind of violence will not be tolerated."

The council is able to start eviction proceedings against this tenant for breaching the tenancy agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, which applies to all the council's rented accommodation, all tenants, their household members and visitors are forbidden from a range of criminal and anti-social activities. Breaches of the agreement render them liable to eviction.

Govindia added: "When you move into a council property, you have to agree to comply with certain tenancy conditions. If you break those conditions you risk losing your home. There is no room on our estates for people who commit violent crimes, who show no consideration for their neighbours or harass, threaten, intimidate or cause disturbance to others."

Re: London Riots Start To Spread Across England (6-10th August 2011)

this is a cool story.

Looting suspect traced on Facebook by stolen laptop's owner

A teenager who allegedly stole a laptop from a west London flat during the riots was traced on Facebook by the computer's owner.

Greg Martin, an information security professional, had a Macbook Pro laptop and other belongings taken from his flat in West Kensington last week.

He had installed a tracking device on the laptop and got the suspect's ID from the social networking site.

Soheil Khalilfar, 18, has been charged with handling stolen goods.

Once he flagged the laptop as missing, Mr Martin waited for the first report to come in.

The former Nasa and FBI employee said: "Almost two weary days had gone by and I'm at dinner on a business trip in Luxembourg and I received an email which nearly knocked me out of my chair with excitement."

Trouble near home

Mr Martin described on his blog how he then monitored the suspected burglar surfing the internet and was able to get his identity from Facebook.

He wrote: "After two hours of watching him surf religious revelation videos, shopping for Mercedes A class on Autotrader he finally popped onto Facebook!"

He said the information included the man's name, school, address in west London and information about his wireless internet.

After he handed the details over to police, they raided the man's flat and recovered the laptop.

Mr Martin was staying at his girlfriend's house, because of trouble near his own home, when the Macbook was stolen.

Mr Khalilfar was bailed to appear before West London Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Re: London Riots Start To Spread Across England (6-10th August 2011)

The footage shows the helmet-wearing rider weave his way through a crowd of looters in Croydon, south London, before being chased down the street by a hooded yob.
Within seconds of being spotted, several other thugs descend on the poor rider like a pack of animals.
After being yanked away by a hooded looter when he tries to fight back, the rider can only look on helplessly as a second opportunistic thief jumps on the vehicle and rides away.
The video, the latest posted on YouTube showing the deplorable behaviour of looters during the riots, then captures the rider bravely trying to get his vehicle back.

When the grey tracksuit-wearing looter crashes the scooter after a matter of seconds, he runs back to try to retrieve it, only to be kicked in the back by yet another yob.
The footage was posted on YouTube by a user called Markosilla on August 10 and has since been viewed more than 4,500 times.

Re: London Riots Start To Spread Across England (6-10th August 2011)

Footage shows rioters shot at unarmed officers and up at a police helicopter
British police have released dramatic footage of rioters shooting at unarmed officers and a police helicopter during an outbreak of violence in Birmingham earlier this month.
West Midlands Police said they were treating the incident as attempted murder, and urged members of the public to help identify those responsible.

The CCTV footage shows a group of 30-40 masked, hooded young men in Newtown in Birmingham - England's second largest city - late on August 9.

They smashed up a pub and other shops, and threw petrol bombs at a passing police car.

They also fired shots at unarmed riot police officers, and up at a police helicopter which was keeping tabs on the rampaging youths.

"Eleven shots were fired at unarmed officers to enable disorder to continue, whilst petrol bombs were also thrown at officers who initially attended the scene," chief constable Chris Sims said in a statement.

"This footage shows seemingly co-ordinated criminal behaviour with no regard for people's lives, whether it be through the setting of a fire, shooting at unarmed officers or shooting at the police helicopter.

"This investigation is being treated as attempted murder and arson, and I am only thankful that this is not a murder inquiry."

Birmingham was one of several English cities hit by unprecedented rioting over four consecutive nights earlier this month, which began in the north London district of Tottenham following the police shooting of a local man.

Five people died in the unrest, including three men from Birmingham who were run down by a car as they tried to protect homes and shops from looters.

Eight people have so far been arrested over the deaths, four of whom have been charged.
