Kitsault: British Columbia Molybdenum Town Emptied in 1982-83
Kitsault was built on the northern coast of British Columbia in 1979 or 1980 to house workers at a molybdenum mine operated by Phelps Dodge. Designed for about 1,200 residents, the town had apartment buildings, houses, a shopping mall, restaurant, swimming pool, bowling alley, library, curling rink and pub. Molybdenum prices collapsed in 1982, prompting the mine to close and the settlement to be evacuated after about 18 months of occupancy. A caretaker maintained Kitsault during more than two decades without permanent residents. Businessman Krishnan Suthanthiran bought the town in the mid-2000s and proposed several redevelopment plans, including an artists and environmental retreat and, in January 2013, a liquefied natural gas terminal. The town remains closed to the public. Photographs by Chad Graham show its empty supermarket, mall, library, pool, locker room, homes, apartment blocks, school playground and waterfront dock, with furnishings and books still in place. |

Re: Kitsault: British Columbia Molybdenum Town Emptied in 1982-83
The investor has vision and is, probably, the type of person that could create, maintain and grow such a project. That is...IF...he can find others like himself with which to do this. What he hasn't found out yet, is that he probably won't find anyone else like him and that pretty much everyone that he tries to help will try to sabotage him, demonize him, hate him and accuse him by way of projecting their own nonsense and wrong doings onto him. Most people only pretend to want change. When things actually start to change they freak out, destroy any progress and set things back to the familiar old rut. "No good deed goes unpunished." |
