They kind of look like they might have inspired parts of his District 9 designs.
you're probably right though as the director is a south african he was probably inspired by these



it's a king cricket or as we all know them in SA, a parktown prawn (hence 'prawns' in the film)

show me a south african who's not scared of these fuckers...

they're carnivorous and mostly nocturnal but if it's an evening barbeque they won't be shy and will come around if there's meat to be found....the evil fuckers have serrated legs so will sever your limbs if they catch you as they jump and they shoot black ink or some shit which is probably deadly poisonous and will give you aids, cancer and ebola....

best avoided

for the record the picture is of an unusually large one....normally people kill them or they drown in our swimming pools before they get too big
