Infinity Tower Pit Flooded by Wall Breach, Dubai Marina, February 7, 2007
Marina water flooded the Infinity Tower foundation excavation in Dubai Marina on February 7, 2007, after a retaining wall separating the site from the water breached. Workers had noticed cracking and movement and were ordered out before the excavation filled. Reports differed on how many people were at the site, putting the number at either 39 or nearly 100, but no injuries were reported. Water initially sprayed through the wall before a torrent poured into the deep excavation, submerging machinery and leaving only a crane boom and hook above the water. The planned 80-floor twisting tower was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for Cayan, with Arabtec serving as contractor. A root-cause analysis and remedial shoring followed. Construction was reported to restart in October 2007, and the tower was later completed.
