Gulliver's Kingdom Theme Park Japan: Yamanashi, 1997-2001
Gulliver's Kingdom was a theme park in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, at the foot of Mount Fuji. Based on Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels," it opened in 1997 and featured a 45-meter statue of Gulliver lying on the ground and pinned down by the tiny people of Lilliput. The park closed in 2001 after attracting few visitors and was demolished in 2007. Niigata Chuo Bank financed the development and later failed under the weight of bad loans. The park's location near the former Aum Shinrikyo compound at Kamikuishiki, where the cult produced sarin, was also cited as a factor in its poor performance. Photographs taken during the park's operation and abandonment show crowds, costumed mascots, themed buildings, the giant Gulliver statue, a bobsled course, a locomotive and other attractions. Later views show graffiti on the statue and vegetation spreading across the empty grounds.

Re: Gulliver's Kingdom Theme Park Japan: Yamanashi, 1997-2001
You know, I could be a smartass and say something like: "He's not going to be able to travel far while on his back", but you'd be surprised to find out that most people get quite far in life in that position! |
