Am I the only one that felt the tiny hairs on the back o my neck stand to attention? And Im an Okie born and bred. Ghost town, I can smell your hot asphalt in the thick humid spirit-filled air, plus the wormy evergreen bush scent mixed with cowpie and Indian soap. Not to mention hear your locusts, skeeters, and chiggers/maggots eating away at anything deceased. Many, many years ago I was drug outta the red clay okie dirt as a kid and its STILL as much a part of my identity as green eyes. Great post!

Cumulonimbus, I am ignorant about removing lead and such, but, couldn't a developer take a hazmat team in there and remove it and bring the place back to life? At the time of the documentary, there were still people living there. The pigeons weren't mutants and the trees, flowers and grass are still growing. Some lawns look maintained in your photos. Weird. Someone's going to have a big electric bill, too! Cool video! Also, very sad, but, interesting :( There are a bunch of US ghost towns after you watch this video. |

I don't believe Picher will be realistically salvageable. The EPA surmises that it will take 35 years to sell/remove all of the toxic chat piles that dot the Picher landscape. There have also been cave-ins from the mines beneath the town, and the water table and soil have been horribly compromised. Picher sits right on the KS-OK border. when you leave town you then enter Treece, KS which suffers from the same problems as Picher. When the EPA offered the buyout to property owners in Picher they didnt extend the same offer to the people of Treece. apparently they felt the fact that they were in 2 different states meant they must have been worlds apart when they actually just across the street from each other. so they turned them into separate cases and wound up telling the residents of Treece that they planned on cleaning the town up instead of buying them out. however since they had no plans of expediting the cleanup of Picher then cleaning up Treece would be totally moot. after several years of investigating tho the EPA finally relented and bought out the residents of Treece also. Currently only 2 stubborn people reside in town making it also an abandoned town.

Thank you for the info, bluebone. I had no idea about Treece. I only explored Picher, and not even as much other that as I would have liked. Next time I'm out that way, I'll explore the are more thoroughly. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that even more of the remaining structures will be gone at that point. That doesn't surprise about how the towns were treated differently. It's funny how an invisible line can cause people to act throw rationality out the window, as if both towns weren't part of the same man-made disaster. Bureacracy at it's finest. |
