My wife since spoke with the wife who rescued the attacked man and got a few more details straight from the horse's mouth:

Prior to attack, the man was sprawled out on his lawn next to the canal, repairing a sprinkler head (no height advantage, so he was easy prey to the gator). The gator grabbed both of his legs and pulled him into the canal. The woman was alerted because the family dog started barking inside the house. If it wasn't for the dog, she would not have suspected a thing. She came out and grabbed the man and had a tug-of-war with the gator, who was still holding holding both legs. The gator ended up with one leg and the woman ended up with most of her husband. She didn't describe the actual severing, but it makes sense that the gator snapped it off with a gator roll. Both husband and wife are retired military, so they took the incident and injury in stride. The husband fully recovered and has a prosthetic leg now.

Nice to see that guy use a frying pan in that link above to evict the croc from his property instead of deadly force with his boomstick. The guy is alive, the croc is alive (albeit with a sore snout); the balance of nature is maintained. Reminded me slightly of that African guy out on a stroll who whacked the dog about to attack unconscious with his walking stick twice then continued his morning stroll. No need to kill

Ha ha. Just as I posted the above gossip, my wife hollared and called the dog in. A gator out back of our place lunged onto shore toward our dog. I went and looked and the guy was just a bitty 4-5 footer. Not our regular resident 10 footer female. She usually chases all the rif-raf away (or eats them), but it is mating season and the males are aggressive and on walkabouts. Our resident 10-footer is curious as a cat and has never been aggressive toward us. I trust her more than a pit bull.

I lived in Sarasota for a coupla yrs in the early 00’s.
Went a few times to Myakka a few times for short hikes and the views, beautiful place.

Saw gators all times i went.
and they kept their distance.
Cool animals.

Looks like a second one in the pool took a lunge at weed wacker guy as he ran past. They sure are hungry.

I used to be a real estate agent and it was disgusting how many houses I had to show with people who neglected their pools. No alligators because I'm in the north-east but there would frequently be dragon-fly lava and pupa swimming and scuttling around inside the pools and those things were huge

Alligators, crocodiles and hippopotamuses are among my favorite animals in the world because between the 3 of them, they help cull and keep the human population down more than any other animal
