TITUSVILLE, Fla. — April 14, 2023

A 72-year-old Brevard County man is recovering from a gator attack. He lost his right leg from the knee down Friday afternoon when the gator got a hold of him from a canal near his Titusville home, at the Great Outdoors RV and Golf Resort on Windsong Way in Brevard County.

The call came in just before 2 p.m. reporting the attack in the sprawling 2,800-acre Great Outdoors RV and Golf resort near Titusville. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers and Brevard County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to track a gator in the canal with rifles near where the attack took place.

Officers spotted an alligator with a human foot clearly protruding from the end of his mouth skimming the water’s surface. At least four shots were fired.

After that, an FWC officer retrieved a foot and part of the leg. Then the officers pulled a gator onshore, and later a second gator was killed as well. Both of them, one larger than the other, were loaded into the back of an FWC pickup truck and hauled off the scene.

The victim was airlifted from near The Great Outdoors to the Holmes Regional Medical Center down in Melbourne.

Sorry I could find no vid or pics of the injured man or his leg. The residences are set about 20 ft away from the canal, with their lawns going right up to the canal. The gators there often sun themselves on the lawns and driveways.

Talked with neighbors to get inside scoop of attack:
The man was out weeding his lawn out back. He saw the resident gator swim by and go further down the canal, so he figured he was safe to weed next to the canal. But another gator sneaked up, grabbed him and dragged him into the water. The gator bit off the leg and bone just below the knee. His wife was weeding out front, heard his hollaring, jumped into the water and dragged the man out. The gator took off with the leg. She immediately used her bra to tourniquet the man's stump. His blood loss was minimal as a result and he stayed conscious. The amputated leg was not in any condition to reuse once FWC retrieved it from the gator. A surgeon made a clean amputation the next day and the man is recovering in good condition.

Ha ha. Just as I posted the above gossip, my wife hollared and called the dog in. A gator out back of our place lunged onto shore toward our dog. I went and looked and the guy was just a bitty 4-5 footer. Not our regular resident 10 footer female. She usually chases all the rif-raf away (or eats them), but it is mating season and the males are aggressive and on walkabouts. Our resident 10-footer is curious as a cat and has never been aggressive toward us. I trust her more than a pit bull.

I don't swim with gators, but I don't shy from them either. In remote swamps, they are very skiddish. If I come up in a kayak, they disappear. The 10er female out back is curious and swims up to watch us when we are in the yard, just for something to do. I walked toward her when she was sunning on the bank, and she leapt in a big arc into the water like a muscular spring. She never sunned on our bank again.

All the gator attacks I hear about fall into a few categories:
1. Pet owners trying to rescue their mini-dog-on-a-strings, which are the actual targets of the gator attacks.
2. Fleeing criminals or drunks stumbling into a swamp in the dark, where they have lost their height advantage and look like dinner sloshing about in the water. Gators can see quite well in the dark, but people can't.
3. The occasional idiot who swims in a pond, lake or river. Again, if a person is swimming, they have lost their height advantage and look like prey, which they are.

The guy who was just attacked Friday in The Great Outdoors was probably squatting or on his hands and knees weeding. Ring the dinner bell.

Last summer a homeless guy got killed by a gator in Orlando. The man earned income by retrieving and selling frisbees that landed in water traps (ponds) in a frisbee golf park. He was no doubt swimming or diving when he met his maker.
