The scientific name for cobalt blue tarantula is Cyriopagopus lividus, but it was formerly known as Haplopelma lividum. It belongs to the Theraphosidae family. The name lividum means black and blue.

At first glance, the cobalt blue tarantula looks black. However, when you look closely or observe under the right light, you will be surprised by a bright blue, shimmery, metallic blue color.

This species is actually semi-fossorial. It spends a lot of time underground but not all time. It does occasionally emerge from its tunnels to warm up in the sun and forage for food.

The cobalt blue tarantula can be aggressive and defensive. It is extremely sensitive to any perceived threat and is ready to attack at any time.

I've owned several Tarantulas over the years. All were quite tame. Well...except for Slash...a big brown (almost black) fella. He was the largest one I owned - prolly close to 6" leg span. And he was pretty feisty. You'd have to stick a pencil or something near him and let him attack it a few times till he got tired, then he was safe to handle. During feeding time, I'd throw in a couple dozen crickets in his cage. He was FAST. Little bastards didn't have a chance. Sometimes he'd get 2 crickets on each fang - like stabbing shrimp on a fork.

My favorite was Corky, another solid brown one, but lighter in color than Slash. Such a chill lil guy. I'd take him with for rides in the car. He liked riding on my shoulder the most.

Then there was Molly Polly. She was a smaller Rose tarantula. She had a colorful, shiny iridescent Cephalothorax (part where the legs sprout from behind the head) that changed color when light shown on it at different angles. She was sweet too. Her favorite fruit was oranges.

I miss them all. Why am I telling you all about them? I don't know. Other than I really do miss them and it really sucks the bad rap these creatures get. They make great pets and are extremely low maintenance and inexpensive to buy as well as take care of. I just felt like talking about them. Really amazing animals!

I have a pet rock.

Even EASIER to maintain, they never die, and they don't eat anything. Also, you can carry them in your pocket without them leaving you a little "surprise shit" in there.

Also, they are very agreeable and quite placid.
