Amazing Meteorite Above Portugal and Spain
ESA's fireball camera in Cáceres, Spain, spotted this stunning meteor. The Planetary Defence Office is currently analyzing the size and trajectory of the object to assess the chance that any material made it to the surface. Early reports claim that the blue flash could be seen darting through the night sky for hundreds of kilometers. At the moment, it has not been confirmed if it hit the Earth’s surface however some reports say it may have fallen near the town of Castro Daire. Other reports say it was closer to Pinheiro. |

I asked my brother yesterday - who's 77, has pancreatic cancer  and is the eldest of six children (I'm the youngest) - "What's the weirdest thing that ever happened to you?" Aside from his big LSD trip (hard acid) in the early 70s, he said it was seeing a meteorite over our grandparents' house coming in fast. He thought it was only a few feet above but it was probably tens of thousands. I imagined it looked something like in these videos.

In the town I grew up in (Stockport, South Manchester UK) a meteorite came down in the 1960s and what was remaining of it was put on display at the entrance to a local park. It was very smooth, about 1.5 metres high and a metre wide, and what I always found odd was that in winter it was not cold to the touch in the way that terrestrial rocks usually are. It was more like a plastic object in that respect, but it was extremely hard like steel. It was impossible to put a scratch on it (yeah we were kids, we tried doing irresponsible stuff like that..) |
