Children in Protective Goggles During Ultraviolet Treatment in the USSR
Soviet pediatric hygiene programs used group ultraviolet irradiation to compensate for limited sunlight, particularly during northern winters. The treatments were intended to help prevent rickets and colds and were administered in facilities known as photaria. Four small children wearing underwear and dark protective goggles stand around a tall ultraviolet lamp in a curtained room. The goggles protected their eyes from ultraviolet exposure and the risk of photo-ophthalmia. A portrait of Vladimir Lenin hangs on the wall behind them. The date and specific location of the scene were not recorded.
