Novelty and Botched Taxidermy: Froggyland's Frog Circus in Split
Among the novelty mounts is Froggyland's circus diorama in Split, Croatia. Hungarian taxidermist Ferenc Mere stuffed the frogs between 1910 and 1920. The collection has been displayed in Split since 1970 and contains 507 frogs arranged across 21 dioramas. The circus scene features a frog pyramid, a trapeze, a high pole, a knife thrower and a circus ring. Other pieces include squirrels posed as cowboys, boxers, fencers and vehicle riders, along with canoe scenes involving squirrels and raccoons. Several predator and large-mammal mounts have distorted faces or unusual poses, including bears, wolves, cougars, leopards and a lion. Smaller mounts include foxes, a winged cat, an otter, a bottle-holding canid and dried animals posed with sports equipment or musical instruments. A separate lion mount at Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, Sweden, was made after the Bey of Algiers gave the animal to King Frederick I of Sweden around 1731. The taxidermist had never seen a living lion. |
