Bryce Hospital Tuscaloosa: Abandoned Mental Asylum in Alabama
Bryce Hospital is Alabama's state psychiatric hospital in Tuscaloosa. Established as the Alabama Insane Hospital after an 1852 state act promoted by reformer Dorothea Dix, its Kirkbride-plan building was completed in 1859 and admitted its first patient on April 5, 1861. The institution was renamed in 1900 for its first superintendent, Peter Bryce. The later Wyatt v. Stickney litigation over conditions at the hospital helped drive mental-health reform across the United States. The Alabama Department of Mental Health sold the historic campus to the University of Alabama in 2010. Patients remained in newer buildings on the old campus until 2014, when they moved to a new 268-bed Bryce Hospital on the former Partlow campus. The historic administration building and center section remained with the university rather than being remodeled as the new hospital. The vacant interiors include peeling corridors, bare patient rooms, bed frames, abandoned furniture, a piano, personal photographs, records, dental instruments and patient artwork. Exterior views show the red-brick Kirkbride building, its columned portico and its illuminated dome.

Cool, I like the dental tools! I wonder if those photographs are of the staff and patients or if its family members of patients, they could be the only photos of people that are now long gone...

It's in better shape than what I have viewed on utube while being just as old.
