A Chinese artist is using the sky as his canvas, manipulating explosives controlled by microchips to create an incredible daytime fireworks display.
New York-based Cai Guo-Qiang uses a computer to control and shape powder explosions into different patterns and images.
He presented his largest explosion event in three years at the Mataf Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar last week.
He calculated the timing of the powder explosions to paint pictures such scattered ink drops, which were formed by black smoke clouds.
He used 8300 shells embedded with microchips to paint an image of a pyramid shape over the desert.
The 54-year-old artist initially dabbled with gunpowder from 1986 to 1995, when he used it in his drawings while living in Japan.
This led to him experimenting with explosives on a major scale and presenting large-scale fireworks events such as the one currently running in Doha.
The Cai Guo-Qiang: Saraab exhibition , which runs at Mataf until March 2012, is his first in the Middle East.
