Considering that each photo would have taken quite a bit of time to capture, the ones with the balls in the air are pretty inventive. I'd assume that the balls were painted or placed on the backdrop in order to make the appearance of a ball in motion. Cool.
The balls are held up by string. Go back and look you can see it in a couple pics.
