Abandoned 350-Meter TV Mast in Kostroma Oblast, Russia, 2008
By December 2008, photographer Victor Borisov had documented a climb of an abandoned television transmitter mast in Kostroma Oblast, Russia. The guyed red-and-white lattice structure was reported to stand 350 meters, or about 1,150 feet, and had been built in the 1990s to carry television service across most of the oblast. Borisov reported that thieves had stripped the warning lights and cable about two years earlier. Restoration was planned, and a guard post had been established to protect the site from scrap-metal thieves. The climb took place amid fog, patchy snow and heavy rime ice. Frost covered the ladder cage, railings, platform grating and antenna equipment. From the top platform, the mast overlooked fields and forest, while straight-down views revealed its guy wires and a small roofless equipment building inside the compound.
