At the speed F1 cars travel down a straight, it would be easy to misjudge how long it would take for a car to close on you. The marshals were volunteers, Van Vuuren was both young and inexperienced. His objective was to get to the stricken car that was on fire. Yes, it was a bad move, but in the days of lax safety regulations, it wasn’t all that unfathomable. |
