Video Shows The Death of Pit Crew Worker Frederick Jansen van Vuuren
The death of Tom Pryce, a Welsh Formula One driver, and a pit crew worker during the 1977 South African Grand Prix remains one of the most tragic incidents in the history of motorsport. Pryce, who was 27 years old at the time, was involved in a fatal collision with Frederick Jansen van Vuuren, a 19-year-old track marshal, during the race held at the Kyalami Circuit on March 5, 1977. The accident occurred when another car made a pit stop, and two marshals, including van Vuuren, ran across the track to attend to a small fire in the vehicle. Pryce, driving at high speed, was unable to see the marshals in time due to a crest in the track. His car struck van Vuuren, who was carrying a fire extinguisher, at an estimated speed of 170 mph. The impact was catastrophic. Van Vuuren was killed instantly, and the fire extinguisher he was carrying struck Pryce in the head, causing fatal injuries. Pryce's car, out of control, continued down the track, eventually colliding with Jacques Laffite's vehicle.

Re: Video Shows The Death of Pit Crew Worker Frederick Jansen van Vuuren
From Wikipedia: .... He struck the teenage marshal at approximately 270 km/h (170 mph). Van Vuuren was thrown into the air and landed in front of Zorzi and Bill. He died on impact, and his body was badly mutilated by Pryce's car. The fire extinguisher he had been carrying smashed into Pryce's head, before striking the Shadow's roll hoop. The force of the impact was such that the extinguisher was thrown up and over the adjacent grandstand. It came to ground in the car park to the rear of the stand, where it hit a parked car and jammed its door shut. The impact with the fire extinguisher wrenched Pryce's helmet upward sharply. Death was almost certainly instantaneous. Pryce's Shadow DN8, now with its driver dead at the wheel, continued at speed down the main straight towards the first corner, called Crowthorne. |

Pryce was the driver, the pit worker who got squashed was Armin Van Vuuren.

LOL The marshall's name was Frederik Jansen van Vuuren, not Armin van Buuren, who is a Dutch trance DJ.
