Perhaps the worst case I know of.

On Saturday, January 6, 2007, Christian and Newsom were going to dinner and then a friend's party. At around 8:00 p.m., Newsom and Christian were about to get into Christian’s car when four assailants—Davison, Cobbins, Thomas, and Boyd—decided to carjack them. Allegedly spooked by the headlights of another car, the four men forced both victims into Christian's SUV at gunpoint. They had their hands tied behind their backs and were taken to Davidson's house at 2316 Chipman Street.

Both Christian and Newsom were raped.

Christopher Newsom is believed to have been raped inside Davidson's house. Newsom was sodomized with an object and raped by at least one of the perpetrators, leaving his anal cavity torn and bloody. Newsom was then walked barefoot on a dog leash to some railroad tracks, where he was shot and killed, then set on fire. Semen was found in his anus but could not be identified because of the fire.

After murdering Newsom, the assailants returned to Davidson's house, where they beat and repeatedly raped Christian. Christian was a virgin at the time of her death. She sustained severe injuries to her vagina, anus, and mouth due to the sexual assaults.

The extensive hemorrhaging of Christian’s groin and anus led medical examiners to believe that, along with being gang raped, Christian was assaulted with a large object. The assailants also violently kicked her in the groin. Her body was covered in carpet burns and bruises.

While Christian was still alive, her attackers poured bleach down her throat and scrubbed her bleeding and battered genital area in an attempt to eliminate DNA. She was hog-tied and placed in a trash bin in the kitchen. Between the afternoon of January 7 and the afternoon of January 8, Christian slowly suffocated to death in the garbage.

I found an image of Christopher's burnt body as it was found on the train tracks.

Lemaricus Davidson, 37, might be the most notorious name from Knox County to make the list. A jury sentenced him to death in 2009 for the carjacking, rape, torture and killings of Channon Christian, 21, and Chris Newsom, 23.

Davidson was 25 when he and four others — Letalvis Cobbins, Eric Boyd, George Thomas and Vanessa Coleman — kidnapped Christian and Newsom at gunpoint while the couple were on a date the night of Jan. 6, 2007.

They drove the couple to Davidson's rental house on Chipman Street in East Knoxville, where Christian and Newsom were held captive and tormented.

The search for the missing couple, the manhunt for their killers, the brutality of the crime and the ensuing trials — which dragged out over six years — made the case Knoxville's most infamous of the 21st century.

The racial elements — Christian and Newsom were white, their kidnappers and killers black — became a rallying cry among white separatists and other far-right groups.

Prosecutors zeroed in on Davidson, a violent felon on parole for another carjacking at the time of the killings, as the ringleader. He was the only one of the five to receive a death sentence.

Davidson's conviction almost fell apart when a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation probe revealed Richard Baumgartner, the presiding judge, had been snorting painkillers on the bench. But attorneys' efforts have failed so far to prove the judge's drug use affected Davidson's case.

Yeah I cannot believe it's actually real. I actually don't think it was a hate crime honestly. Some of the witnesses who testified (girls sleeping with assailants, etc) were white. I think they were obviously eager to abuse an attractive white woman but I don't think their being white was a motivation here really.

I'm left-wing but this case deserves every bit as much attention as Emmett Till and James Byrd Jr. Hate is hate no matter who's the aggressor.
