Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known as Selena, was a renowned Mexican-American singer, songwriter, and fashion designer. Born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas, she rose to prominence as a leading figure in Tejano music, a genre that blends Mexican, European, and U.S. influences.

The tragic end to Selena's life occurred on March 31, 1995, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The perpetrator was Yolanda Saldívar, the president of Selena's fan club and the manager of her boutiques. Saldívar had been an ardent admirer of Selena and had integrated herself into the singer's inner circle, eventually gaining her trust.

However, in early 1995, Selena's family discovered financial discrepancies in the operations of both the fan club and the boutiques, leading them to suspect Saldívar of embezzlement. This discovery strained the relationship between Selena and Saldívar.

On the morning of March 31, Selena met with Saldívar at the Days Inn in Corpus Christi to retrieve financial records. It was during this meeting that Saldívar shot Selena once in the back, severing an artery. Despite being critically wounded, Selena managed to flee to the hotel lobby, where she named Saldívar as her assailant before collapsing. She was rushed to the Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead due to blood loss and cardiac arrest.

Saldívar was arrested after a nine-and-a-half-hour standoff with the police, during which she held a gun to her own head. She was later tried and convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years, which will be in 2025.

technically she was american. she was born and raised in texas. her father was of mexican heritage, tho. and she was huge in mexico, b/c she released spanish language music.
