The Saigon Execution Photo: The Story Behind Eddie Adams' Picture
During the Tet Offensive, South Vietnamese General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executed Viet Cong captain Nguyen Van Lem in a Saigon street on February 1, 1968. Eddie Adams photographed the killing and received the Pulitzer Prize for the picture, which became one of the Vietnam War's defining images. Accounts from the period say that earlier the same day, Lem had been accused of killing relatives of South Vietnamese police officers. |

Yeah, I was really surprised to learn about the back story to this photo, too! I was born several epochs ago, and was always told that this is a picture of a spy being executed. Learning about the truth of it makes me wonder what else I was misinformed about... |

It really doesn't change much if you know your Vietnam Conflict history. It was well documented that Nguyễn Văn Lém, the man executed was a murderer. But he was also a captain in the Viet Cong.
