Reporter Brent Renaud Killed in Ukraine
Brent Renaud, an American journalist and documentary filmmaker, was killed on March 13, 2022, in Irpin, Ukraine, a suburb of Kyiv. Renaud, aged 50, was covering the Russian invasion of Ukraine when he was shot by Russian forces, according to Ukrainian police. His death highlighted the dangers journalists face while reporting in conflict zones and underscored the human toll of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Renaud was an award-winning journalist known for his work in various global hotspots, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and Haiti. He often focused on humanitarian issues, conflict, and the plight of refugees. Renaud's work appeared in numerous publications and networks, and he was also recognized for his documentary filmmaking. At the time of his death, Renaud was reportedly working on a project related to the global refugee crisis. He was traveling with another journalist when they came under fire at a checkpoint in Irpin, a city that had been witnessing intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces. |

Re: Reporter Brent Renaud Killed in Ukraine
~ He wasn't supposed to be there, since he was not on assignment. https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...forces-ukraine ~ Clifford Levy, a deputy managing editor of the New York Times, issued a statement on Twitter clarifying that Renaud was not on assignment for the paper, contrary to earlier reports. “[The New York Times] is deeply saddened to learn of the death of an American journalist in Ukraine, Brent Renaud. Brent was a talented photographer and film-maker, but he was not on assignment for the New York Times in Ukraine. Early reports that he worked for Times circulated because he was wearing a Times press badge he had been issued for an assignment many years ago.” |

Re: Reporter Brent Renaud Killed in Ukraine
so, it's my understanding that members of the press/journalists fall under the same category as medics (NON-Combatants). how does that affect this case, since he a journalist even though he was there without being assigned to be?

It's the same as being a civilian non-combatant. You aren't supposed to be a target. But tell that to all the Ukrainians who have been shot while standing around.
