This was at the very end of WWII and sentiments were running very high. These were clearly "criminal" actions (strictly speaking) and they were reported, but the report was quietly 'shelved' by decision at the highest levels. The thinking at the time was that the soldiers and prisoners were only human and were pushed to their breaking points by their experiences over the previous years. And, of course, the Nazis were uniformly despised. I can't blame them at all. They should have pi**ed on the bodies too, IMO. |
