Why is her husband so caught up on the idea that she wasn't FUCKED UP.? She obviously got fucked up quickly somewhere. And just because no one ever saw her drunk or anything g doesn't matter at all. If she was addicted to something addicts are masters at hiding their addictions from everyone.

I think he's just trying to protect himself from being considered responsible for the "accident". If he admitted that she was still drunk or high from the night before, or that she frequently got drunk or high, then people would want to know why he allowed her to drive the kids.

My theory: Danny was cheating on her, and she found out that weekend. That's why he went to the campsite several days before her, he had another woman there.

Finding/figuring out he was cheating on her was her "come to Jesus" moment, and she realized what a shitty life she had, with her cheating douchebag manchild hubby. She knew/realized Danny had never wanted to have kids, and so decided that she'd be better off killing her kids so they weren't stuck with him.

As for the reason she killed the nieces, there are two options imo:

1) they were just collateral damage, she was gonna do end it all now and didn't give a fuck that they were innocent victims;

or 2) the person Danny was cheating with was the mother of the nieces/the wife of Diane's brother, and so she wanted to punish her SIL (and maybe the nieces as well, especially if the affair was long-term and Danny could've been the father to one or more of them).
