Moscow Idaho Student Quadruple Homicide
In the early morning hours of November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students were murdered inside an off-campus rental house at 1122 King Road in Moscow, Idaho. The victims were Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. On December 30, 2022, Bryan Christopher Kohberger was arrested in Pennsylvania and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary. At the time, Kohberger was a graduate student at Washington State University in Pullman, about 10 miles from Moscow. The case was originally headed toward a death penalty trial, but that never happened. In July 2025, Kohberger pleaded guilty to all four murders and burglary as part of a deal that removed the death penalty. He was later sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without parole. I still seriously doubt the most graphic crime scene photos will ever be released, but with a case this high profile, who knows. Here is a layout of the house showing the rooms and where everyone was located. THE NIGHT OF THE MURDERS Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen lived at the King Road house along with surviving roommates Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen. Kaylee Goncalves had previously lived there and was visiting that weekend. Ethan Chapin was Xana's boyfriend and was staying with her that night. According to the police affidavit, Ethan and Xana were at the Sigma Chi fraternity house on the University of Idaho campus during the evening of November 12. They returned home at about 1:45 a.m. Madison and Kaylee had been out in downtown Moscow. They were at the Corner Club and later appeared on video at the Grub Truck food stand. A private driver took them back to the house, where they arrived at about 1:56 a.m. So by around 2:00 a.m., everyone was back at the house. Xana received a DoorDash order at approximately 4:00 a.m. Investigators also found activity on her phone showing that she was likely using TikTok at approximately 4:12 a.m. She was almost certainly awake very close to the time the murders happened. WHAT DYLAN MORTENSEN HEARD AND SAW According to the affidavit, Dylan Mortensen was sleeping in a bedroom on the second floor. At around 4:00 a.m., she woke up after hearing what she thought sounded like Kaylee playing with her dog upstairs. A short time later, she heard a female voice say something to the effect of, "There's someone here." Dylan initially believed it was Kaylee. Investigators noted that it could also have been Xana because Xana's phone showed she was awake around that same time. She opened her bedroom door but did not see anything. She later opened it a second time after hearing what sounded like crying coming from Xana's room. She then heard a man's voice say something to the effect of, "It's OK, I'm going to help you." At about 4:17 a.m., a nearby security camera picked up distorted audio that police described as voices or whimpering followed by a loud thud. A dog could also be heard barking several times. Then Dylan opened her door a third time. This time she saw a man dressed in black walking toward her, wearing a mask that covered his mouth and nose. She described him as at least 5'10", not very muscular but athletically built, with bushy eyebrows. According to the affidavit, the man walked right past her while she stood there in what she described as a "frozen shock phase." He continued toward the sliding glass door, and Dylan went back into her room and locked the door. According to her statement, she actually saw the killer walking through the house on his way out. WHAT POLICE FOUND INSIDE When police later processed the house, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were found in Xana's second-floor bedroom. According to Corporal Brett Payne's affidavit, Xana was visible on the floor as he approached the room and had injuries that appeared to have been caused by an edged weapon. Ethan was also found deceased inside the room. On the third floor, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves were found together in Madison's bedroom. Both had visible stab wounds. Next to Madison, investigators found a tan leather knife sheath marked "Ka-Bar" and "USMC," with the Marine Corps eagle, globe and anchor insignia on it. Police later said a single-source male DNA profile was found on the button snap. THE WHITE HYUNDAI ELANTRA Investigators collected surveillance video from around the neighborhood. A white sedan, referred to in the affidavit as "Suspect Vehicle 1," appeared several times on cameras near King Road. Police said the vehicle made three passes through the area before returning for a fourth time at approximately 4:04 a.m. At approximately 4:20 a.m., the vehicle was recorded leaving the area at what police described as a high rate of speed. Investigators eventually connected a white 2015 Hyundai Elantra to Bryan Kohberger. Police also noted that Kohberger's height, build and bushy eyebrows were consistent with Dylan's description. THE CELL PHONE EVIDENCE Investigators obtained records for a phone associated with Kohberger. At approximately 2:42 a.m., the phone was using cellular resources near his apartment in Pullman. At about 2:47 a.m., its activity was consistent with the phone moving away from that area. Then the phone stopped reporting to the cellular network. It did not reconnect until approximately 4:48 a.m., south of Moscow. The phone later used cellular resources providing coverage to the King Road area between approximately 9:12 a.m. and 9:21 a.m. that morning before heading back toward Pullman. Police also went through older records. According to the affidavit, the phone had used cellular resources providing coverage to the King Road area on at least 12 occasions before the murders. All but one happened during late evening or early morning hours. That does not prove he was sitting outside the house on those occasions. It only shows that the phone was using cellular resources that served that area. THE DNA AND ARREST Investigators eventually collected trash from the Kohberger family home in Pennsylvania and sent it for DNA testing. The DNA obtained from the trash indicated that a male associated with the family could not be excluded as the biological father of the person whose DNA was found on the knife sheath. According to the affidavit, at least 99.9998 percent of the male population would be expected to be excluded as the possible biological father. On December 30, 2022, Kohberger was arrested at his family's home in Pennsylvania. For the next couple of years it looked like this case was headed for a massive trial. Instead, Kohberger pleaded guilty in 2025. So we know who killed Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. What we still do not really know is why. The murder weapon has never been recovered, and Kohberger has never publicly given a meaningful explanation for why he entered that house and murdered four people. After everything that has come out about this case, that may end up being the one question that never gets answered. |

Re: Moscow Idaho Student Quadruple Homicide
He’s definitely got some anger issues to work through. They need to adjust some laws in the US. Take his ass directly to the death chamber and give him the shot 5 minutes after the verdict is handed down. He doesn’t deserve to suck air, eat food or anything else for the next twenty years waiting for his execution. I’d walk him right out of the courtroom to the firing squad. |
