so, it's my understanding that members of the press/journalists fall under the same category as medics (NON-Combatants).

how does that affect this case, since he a journalist even though he was there without being assigned to be?

It's the same as being a civilian non-combatant. You aren't supposed to be a target. But tell that to all the Ukrainians who have been shot while standing around.
