His wealthy father provided a top lawyer for his defense, and after being held for two years without trial the French judge Jean-Louis Bruguière found him "obviously" legally insane and unfit to stand trial and ordered Sagawa to be held indefinitely in a mental institution.[1] Following a visit by the author Inuhiko Yomota, Sagawa's account of the murder was published in Japan with the title In the Fog.[1] The subsequent publicity and macabre celebrity of Sagawa likely contributed to the French authorities' decision to have him extradited to Japan. Upon arrival in Japan, he was immediately taken to Matsuzawa hospital, where examining psychologists all found him to be sane but "evil".[1] However, Japanese authorities found it to be legally impossible to hold him, because the French court refused to hand pertinent paper to Japan, claiming that the case was already dropped in France. As a result, Sagawa checked himself out of the mental institution on August 12, 1986, and has been a free man ever since.[1]

I agree there's been NO justice, but the original facts presented in this thread are a little lacking:

THE FRENCH ARE TO BLAME ! ! ! ! !

1) The French chose to label him "insane" vs. "able to stand trial", where he'd have been imprisoned. They would have kept him in a mental hospital had he been French. The only condition the French imposed upon his release was that he never return to France, not that he serve time in Japan. They are 100,% to blame cuz criminals are ALWAYS imprisoned where they commit their crime, since the definition of whether a crime has even been committed is up to that nation. Do you see the USA prosecuting foreigners & that shipping their arses round the world? It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I've also NEVER heard of criminals being released & deported cuz it was "TOO EXPENSIVE" ?!

2) He's beyond a disgusting soulless human being. He's written 20-30 books on his crime & EVEN MADE PORN FILMS RECREATING HIS CRIME WITH DUTCH ACTRESSES!!! In that way, he can relive his crime and even be paid for it!

3) There was never any intention of prosecuting him before he returned to Japan cuz THE CRIME DIDN'T HAPPEN IN JAPAN! I've never heard of a case where someone commits a crime in one country & is prosecuted there but then serves time in another nation as a budget-saving mechanism. He arrived in Japan a free man, having committed no crime in Japan & his father paid the hospital off to keep his son in for a few months just to allay media outcry & publicity.

It's like Americans jailed in Asia for drug-smuggling and are caned, for example. They're neither prosecuted nor convicted / sentenced in the USA & when they get home, it doesn't affect their domestic criminal history.

4) It's not only the Japanese who are sick fucks. Look how DR itself is dedicated to guys like this fuck. Anglo & Japanese cultures do seem to be particularly dirtied by deviant tastes, but there you have it.

5) Renee Hartevelt's family are incensed by the douchebag's freedom. I'd be surprised if a few unsolved murders in Tokyo weren't due to him.

Unfortunately, the Japanese have no law to force treatment on someone who's otherwise not a criminal, so HE'S EVEN GOT A PASSPORT & visited Iceland. He's got photos of his trip there with naked white chicks (his preference), but noone knows who they are or how to contact them...
