The Hillside Strangler case began in Los Angeles in 1977 after the bodies of several young women and girls started appearing on hillsides and in other locations around the city. Police originally believed they were searching for a single killer, which led newspapers to use the name "Hillside Strangler." Investigators later discovered that the murders had actually been committed by two cousins, Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono Jr. Between October 1977 and February 1978, the two men murdered 10 victims, many of whom were abducted after the killers pretended to be police officers.

The way the victims were discovered became an important part of the case. Several bodies had been left in visible locations on hillsides or near roads around Los Angeles, apparently after being killed somewhere else. The first confirmed victim, 19-year-old Yolanda Washington, was found on a hillside near the Ventura Freeway. Other victims were discovered in residential areas, near hillsides, and along roads. The final Los Angeles victim, 20-year-old Cindy Hudspeth, was found after a helicopter pilot spotted her car partway down a cliff near Angeles Crest Highway; police later discovered her body inside the trunk. The repeated discovery of victims in these locations helped create the name that became associated with the killers.

The murders stopped in Los Angeles after Bianchi moved to Washington state, but he was arrested there in January 1979 after killing two more women. During the investigation, Bianchi eventually admitted his involvement in the Los Angeles murders and identified Buono as his accomplice. Bianchi received life sentences after cooperating with prosecutors, while Buono was later convicted of nine murders and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Buono died in prison in 2002, while Bianchi remained incarcerated decades later.
