On July 6th, 2012, sixteen-year-old Skylar Neese snuck out of her house in Star City, West Virginia, to go joy-riding with her best friends, Rachel Shoaf and Shelia Eddy.

Shelia Eddy, also 16, had been close with Skylar since elementary school. When Rachel Shoaf began attending their high school, the twosome became a threesome, and tensions began, as evidenced by their angsty Twitter accounts.

Rachel and Shelia wore sweatshirts and were holding kitchen knives on that hot July night. The three girls were self-described potheads. They drove to a remote area in Pennsylvania, and when Skylar went to the car to get a lighter, the girls counted to three and then began (literally) stabbing Skylar in the back.

Skylar screamed, “Why?” as they stabbed her. At one point, Skylar was able to grab Rachel's knife and cut her on her lower leg. Skylar scrambled to her feet and broke free from Shelia (the smallest of the three girls.) She started to run when Rachel tackled her to the ground. Shelia and Rachel said "die, bitch," as they stabbed Skylar more than 50 times. Rachel said that Skylar’s throat made weird gurgling noises until she took her last breath.

The two girls planned to kill Skylar on that particular night because Rachel was leaving for church camp in the next few days.

What followed was a 6-months long charade. The girls, especially Shelia, put out pleas on social media for Skylar, saying how much she missed and loved her. Skylar was presumed missing in the beginning. Shelia, who was close to Skylar’s parents, often visited with them. Laying in the arms of Skylar’s mom, Shelia would cry about how much she missed her friend.

Law enforcement had no choice but to keep hounding Shelia and Rachel, suspecting they knew where Skylar was. Skylar’s parents, Mary and Dave Neese even got upset with the police for “harassing” the girls and asked them to stop.

Rumors swirled around school to the point that the girls had to be taken out and home-schooled. The pressure began to eat away at Rachel. By January, the Neese’s had realized that their daughter’s “friends” knew more than they were saying. Rachel had a mental breakdown and beat the shit out of her mom. She was put in a psych ward and then confessed shortly after. She led LE to Skylar’s severely decomposed body. Her head had been carried off by animals but was later recovered.

It took multiple trips with Rachel to find Skylar's body because of the remoteness and denseness of the location. Without Rachel ratting, Skylar would likely never have been found and the two teens may have gotten away with murder (which is why Shelia despises Rachel to this day.)

After Rachel's confession, LE did locate a trace amount of Skylar's blood in the trunk of Shelia's car. I guess they had no probable cause for search and seizure until Rachel confessed.

At the time of her confession, Rachel said their motive for killing Skylar was because they didn’t want to be her friend anymore and that she was annoying. However, in her most recent parole hearing, she stated that she and Shelia were in a toxic lesbian relationship and were scared Skylar would out them.

Skylar’s mom confirmed that there was an entry in Skylar's diary where she recounted watching the Rachel and Shelia have sex. The three girls had gotten into Rachel’s mom's liquor cabinet. They went to Rachel's room, where Rachel and Shelia began going down on each other and scissoring in front of Skylar. Skylar tried to leave the room but the girls wouldn't let her because they didn't want Rachel's mom to notice their drunkness.

The lesbian motive might have been real for Rachel, who's family was very religious (murder:ok, lesbian sex:bad.) Shelia on the other hand was known to make out with girls at parties and posted a lot of suggestive pictures online (see below.)

Following her guilty plea on May 1, 2013, on February 26, 2014, Rachel Shoaf received a sentence of 30 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after 10 years (denied in 2023.) Shelia was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. They both are held in Lakin Correctional Center but do not speak to one another.
Apparently, Shelia chewed her out when the first got there, calling her a rat and saying she'd never speak to her again.

Shelia is thriving in the big lesbian playground that is womens prison. She does not speak on Skylar's murder and has never shown any remorse.

I think I remember seeing this case on ABC's 20/20 or one of those shows. Normally I never watched things like this but once I saw the preview and heard, "Coming Up. Teenage lesbian murder triangle!" and saw they didn't look like drag kings, I was sold and tuned in
