Ira Einhorn was a well-known activist and a figure in the counterculture and environmental movements of the 1960s and 1970s. He was dubbed the "Unicorn" due to his last name, which means "one horn" in German. Einhorn had been in a five-year relationship with Holly Maddux before her disappearance.

In March 1979, the police discovered Maddux's decomposed body in a trunk in Einhorn's apartment in Philadelphia, over a year after she had gone missing. Einhorn was arrested and charged with her murder, but he maintained his innocence, claiming that Maddux had left to go to the neighborhood store and never returned.

In 1981, facing trial, Einhorn fled the United States and lived in Europe under a false identity for almost two decades. His absence turned the case into an international manhunt. He was found and arrested in France in 1997. In 2002, Ira Einhorn was tried and convicted of the murder of Holly Maddux and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
