As someone who has extensively researched Apollo 1 for many years, I can say that these are, in fact, empty suits. These photos were taken after the suits had been removed. Still, the photos are chilling to see. The burns to the astronauts' bodies were survivable. They were asphyxiated by the smoke. |

It's pretty much a fact that 3 of them at least were alive till touchdown in the ocean. What I've always wanted to see is the in cabin video stream for that 3+ min while decending. I don't know why, but seeing the faint and ghostly images of their faces/skulls in their helmets chills me to the bone. I can watch people get their heads cut off, burned alive, or splattered on the road, but those images specifically sent chills down my spine. I don't know if it's an uncanny valley effect or what. |
