It was hard to like Brandon Teena because she/he was thieving scum that had no problem stealing from impoverished young mothers (something even the highly romanticized movie couldn't whitewash) plus it was ultimately her that got innocent people killed but compared to the creeps that killed them, it makes it more palatable by default.
