Jeff Bauman
IN the days after the bombing Jeff’s bravery and heroic help for the investigating cops earned him nationwide admiration.
The aspiring singer-songwriter, 27, who lost both legs in the blast, told police immediately after his surgery that he had locked eyes with one of the bombers who put a backpack down near him.
His brother Chris said: “He woke up, under so much drugs, and asked for paper and a pen and wrote, ‘Bag, saw the guy, looked right at me’.”
Remarkable ... anti-war activist Carlos Arredondo in a cowboy hat helps Jeff after blast
Jeff, who was pictured with his face splattered in blood as he was wheeled away from the carnage by anti-war activist Carlos Arredondo, worked with a sketch artist and his detailed description led the FBI to CCTV footage of bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev acting suspiciously.
Chris, 22, said: “Jeff told me he felt weird because this guy was in his private space and Jeff just felt it was really awkward. So he turned around and looked right at the guy and the guy gave him a nod and a smile.
“Jeff said a couple of minutes later the bag was leaning against his leg. He thought it was weird and looked around but couldn’t see the guy. He thought he had gone into a store or something.”
Inspiring ... Jeff meets another survivor, Sydney Corcoran, on her 18th birthday
Three minutes later the bag exploded, ripping Jeff’s legs to shreds. But despite his horrific injuries, as soon as he was moved out of intensive care he vowed to visit other survivors. His first stop was Sydney Corcoran, who celebrated her 18th birthday at Boston Medical Center.
Sydney, who suffered horrific shrapnel wounds, and her 47-year-old mum Celeste, who lost both legs, are in adjoining hospital beds.
They were stunned when Jeff wheeled himself into their room with a birthday present for Sydney.
Big boost ... Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper and New England Patriots American footballers visit Jeff
Later the duo’s family wrote on a fundraising webpage: “What a sweetheart. Very emotional and awesome experience for all involved.”
Hollywood star Bradley Cooper and several New England Patriots American footballers popped in to visit Jeff as he recovered from surgery.
Chris said the VIP visitors really helped his recovery. But he got the biggest boost from making his own hospital rounds to see how other survivors were bearing up.
Chris added: “After all this he’s still just thinking about other people.”
