This is a result of an attempted thoracotomy by medical staff. His lung had collapsed and they were trying to reinflate it and place a chest tube for drainage by cutting into his chest, but to no avail, he was beyond help.

Reverse image: live shows right side, in death the wound was on the left side, but image reversed to compare it to the area on the live photo.

He was also ran over by his brother while making his getaway, thus the huge laceration on his left side.
