Bonehead, no one expects them to allow you to survive something like that. But as nyazzip said....you better have them in bad turbulence, or on a hard landing, or a bad patch of weather. I had a 727 (yeah, Im old enough to remember the old 727) that dipped 8000 feet in like 15 seconds. Everyones trays (yes...food...back then you actually got decent food) went flying, purses, bags....and yes...about 4 people who didnt have their seatbelts on. It was kinda humorous. If I wasn't experiencing the single greatest moment of terror in my life, I might have even laughed. I never take mine off in a plane anymore. Ever.
