Bodies From The Franklin Expedition in 1845
The Franklin Expedition, a British voyage of Arctic exploration led by Captain Sir John Franklin, remains one of the most enduring mysteries in the history of polar exploration. The expedition, which set sail from England in 1845 with two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, aimed to chart and navigate the last unexplored section of the Northwest Passage. However, the expedition met with disaster, resulting in the loss of both ships and all 129 crew members. Franklin, a seasoned explorer, and his crew embarked on the voyage with high hopes of achieving a significant maritime milestone. The expedition's initial phase appeared to proceed as planned, but the ships became trapped in ice off King William Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. This led to the crew enduring harsh conditions and eventually facing starvation and exposure to extreme cold. The exact circumstances of the expedition's demise remained unknown for many years. Initial search efforts in the years following the disappearance yielded little information. Inuit testimonies and later expeditions uncovered evidence, including artifacts and human remains, which suggested that the crew resorted to cannibalism in their final desperate days. In 2014, the wreck of HMS Erebus was discovered, followed by the discovery of HMS Terror in 2016. These finds have provided valuable insights into the final journey of the Franklin Expedition, although many questions still remain. The analysis of artifacts and the examination of the wrecks continue to shed light on the challenges faced by the crew in their final months.  ·  · |
