The Beslan Massacre 2004, 385 People Killed By Chechen Rebels
The Beslan school siege, often referred to as the Beslan Massacre, was a terrorist attack that began on September 1, 2004, and lasted for three days, resulting in the deaths of 334 hostages, including 186 children. This event took place in the town of Beslan, in North Ossetia, Russia. The crisis began when a group of armed terrorists, linked to Chechen separatists, stormed School Number One in Beslan on the first day of the school year, when a celebration was taking place. The terrorists took more than 1,000 hostages, including students, parents, and teachers, and held them in the school's gymnasium, rigging the building with explosives. The standoff between the terrorists and Russian security forces was tense and prolonged. On the third day of the siege, September 3, a series of explosions and a chaotic shootout led to the gymnasium being engulfed in flames. The situation rapidly deteriorated, and Russian forces stormed the building in an attempt to rescue the hostages. The siege ended with a tragic loss of life. In addition to the hostages killed, hundreds were injured, and many suffered severe psychological trauma. The handling of the crisis by Russian authorities, particularly the use of force during the rescue operation, was widely criticized and remains a subject of controversy.
