Yeah, he wasn't trying to kill himself. He was suffering from major insomnia and just wanted to sleep. I've had bad sleep problems and let me tell you it is VERY easy to take too many. When one doesn't work so well and you're still awake, you take another because the first has dulled your judgment. I've gotten really sick from it.

You don't have to take a shitful of meds to overdose-just miscalculate the dose of one or two drugs.It's actually easier than you think for your doctor to screw up and prescribe meds that are contra-indicated,particularly if they do house calls and don't have your medical history in front of them.I've been taking an opioid for pain control of a serious health complaint for years,as well as an anti-depressant with pain-relief properties without any problems.One year after a partuclarly bad bout of clinical depression,my doctor decided to up the antidepressant dosage but didn't check how it went in higher dosages with the opiate.Also,at the time I'd been ill and my weight was on the low side for me-about 47 kilos.I took the meds on a Monday night and woke up on Thursday afternoon.Lost a couple of days!Scared the shit outta me,and went back to my old dose.My doc didn't realise the two were simply too much for a small gal to take.
Add that Heath and Brittany Murphy both had pneumonia at the time(which you can have and not know,as my sister did),in their weakened state only a slight overdose would be needed to kill them.
