Two years ago, I spent nearly six months living in Rome, Italy.

While I was in Italy, there were things I loved about the country: the fact that I could walk around the Trastevere neighborhood and feel like I was walking around in an old movie, the fresh fruit that awaited me every morning when I stepped outside my flat, and the ability to immerse myself in a foreign language and culture. There were also things I hated, such as the constant transit strikes that could make getting around the city nearly impossible; the day I walked into a post office to be told they were all out of stamps for the week when it was a Monday, wasn’t a particularly good day either.

It's been nearly two years since I left Rome and while I learned an incredible amount about myself, Italy, and even the United States, the one thing I have continued to miss is the news. Yes, we have news in the U.S., but it’s not the same. The entire time I was in Italy, I don’t think I heard a single thing about Britney Spears's newest escapade, or Lindsay Lohan's newest debacle. Of course, when I came back, I was treated to almost 24/7 coverage by CNN of Anna Nicole Smith.

In Italy, if celebrities were mentioned in the news, it was because or a new movie or song, not the newest disaster in their love lives. The majority of the news was spent covering wars going on, and the Italian National Guard being sent into Naples. It was refreshing to turn on the TV and learn about a situation in Africa, or a new peace deal in the Middle East.

I’m not sure why the U.S. media has to pay so much attention to the trivial details of celebrities’ personal lives when we are fighting two wars, when Sudan, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe are falling apart, and the cease-fire in the Middle East is on the verge of breaking. Apparently, they think the American public is more interested in Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg and in Britney Spears's latest comeback, than in OPEC’s latest conference and the treaty on cluster bombs; at least, Burress and Spears are featured much more prominently. The sad truth is that the U.S. media does it because it sells more papers than if they covered the war in Nigeria.

This is how I chose to remember Anna Nicole Smith.
She was a wonderful mother who only wanted to provide her children everything she could. I think a lot of getting to that point involved doing things which I'm sure the public made her feel extremely guilty for. I think if I had to endure what she did I would be on opiates too. I think her bottom was her son's death. You could almost feel it in that picture with her son after he had passed away and she was holding him. He was the beginning and the end of Anna Nicole. May she rest in peace.

She was a horrible mother who brought everything on herself, her son didn't live with her and she is probably why he died. She was a embarrassment to her family, a junkie, a dishonest person who married for money. Its sad what became of her and her son but she deserves no sympathy. Not to mention we only knew her because she was gorgeous and resembled Marilyn Monroe. If she was ordinary no one would care. This is a great example of someone coming from nothing and becoming rich and famous and not mature and intelligent enoughto handle it. Add that with surrounding yourself with leaches and others who want exploit you and your fucked. But don't forget she had her money she could have disappeared into the night but she wanted it.

She came from poverty AND a crazy mother. She ALWAYS had her son with her. I'm not sure where you got your info, but I assure you her son was with her. No matter were she went, he went as well. She never got the old man's money sadly. All of that is still in litigation. Maybe her daughter will end up inheriting it all, who knows.

It's not easy for an uneducated 20ish something woman with a child and no support to to build a life. Almost impossible. But she kept herself in the spotlight all those years and supported her son. She did what she thought was right. Unfortunately, it did her in.
