That he was lucid enough to only commit his crimes while his parents were away each summer, hide his crimes all these years and also maintain a successful "outer" life as a historian suggests he has a lot more lucidity and awareness of the wrongness of his actions than most mentally ill criminals considered fit to stand trial.
