Abraham Lincoln Laying In State
There is reportedly only one photograph that ever existed of President Abraham Lincoln as he Lay In State. Approximately 7 million people viewed the beautifully embalmed body of the President during his funeral procession from Washington to Illinois. The body of Abraham Lincoln was moved 10 times between 1865 and 1901 for several reasons, including an attempted body snatching. An interesting fact: The funeral procession, from the White House to the Capital, was Led by a black regiment; the 22nd US Coloured Infantry. I searched for similar posting and did find one picture but it's a distant image of low quality. *Note the tomb in the last picture is not the final resting place. The bodies of the President and his family members were moved numerous times after this first location. |

Around 1900 they opened up Lincolns casket. It was lead sealed, Lincolns body was very well preserved and clearly recognizable, perhaps due to the arsenic they used for embalming in those days. However, the Brooks Brothers suit he was buried in was growing yellow mold on the surface.

Why did they open up his coffin? I think he should have been allowed to rest in peace.

Re: Abraham Lincoln Laying In State
The reason they opened the casket was because there was controversy that it wasn't his body in the casket, since he had been moved so often, and subjected to attempted body thefts. They called together a group of people who knew him in real life, had them identify the corpse and swear an affidavit that it was really him, and then buried him for the final time. This was in the tomb in Illinois where he rests now.

Re: Abraham Lincoln Laying In State
Lincoln's body is without doubt the most disgracefully treated body of a President in all of American history. His body was almost stolen by counterfeiters to be held for ransom. His body laid in a basement covered under a woodpile for 2 years. It was buried 3 inches below the ground and unknowingly walked on by builders of his permanent tomb for a few more years. Followed by many other indignities to both he and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln's body after her death in the 1880's. Anyway, if anyone cares to learn more about what happened to Lincoln's body I suggest you watch a History Channel Documentary on YouTube called "Stealing Lincolns Body". Start watching around 55mins or so which is where they get into what happened to his body after supposedly being laid to rest. |
