Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

i do miss the open weight competitions, but i guess now adays everyone knows all about jiu jitsu so dont have that sorta advantage over bigger opponents like royce gracie did in the old days.

i find it disappointing when an accidental head butt or something like that causes a cut and then they stop the fight due to the and give the win to the person who caused the cut by an accidental or illegal move in the first place

Very interesting comment that Render Gracie made about this fight. He said something like if this was a street fight or bare knuckle fight, Dos Santos would have shattered his hand in 5 different places.

I tend to agree with this. Dos Santos right hand was recorded at around 2400 lbs of force and you can see from the film that he put everything into that overhand right.

Those small 4 ounce gloves give the fighters the confidence to throw and not worry about breaking their hands, although on occasion they still do.

bas rutten says he prefers to use the palm of the hand though. cause if you give a straight with the palm and you connect with the lower part of your palm it's a lot harder then your hand, that pic almost makes it look like he's hit with the lower palm of his hand there.

in the first few UFCs a few people broke their hands, gordeau broke his hand on tuli's face and i forget the guy's name but the one who fought yarborough in ufc 2 or 3 broke his hand on yarborough's head as well, think it might have been hackney?

No one really uses palm strikes in stand up because it limits your reach, but you do see them occasionally up close. Also the chances of an eye poke are pretty high with palm strikes so people tend to avoid them.

Bas Rutten fought in Pancrase where you were not allowed to strike with a closed fist to the face so he utilized palm strikes.

Who are you picking for UFC 139?

i do know that pancrase had a no closed fist to the face rule or something along those lines, but in some of his little clips about striking and self defence clips he talks about using the palm of the hand because it's so hard.

while i've been increasing the amount of fights I watch I dont know enough yet to be able to pick winners or losers as i dont know the fighters well enough, but getting into the "newer" style of ufc more n more as time goes by.

i wonder what prison he is talking about there. i had a search online but couldnt find anything about a swedish prison inside a mountain. did find some forums with people looking to find out bout this place but not not knowing about it

posted a video of him talkin about that event a while back as well

and I hadn't seen that video yet, it's a good thing the guards were fans cause that could have been really shitty stay.

i came across that one as well while trying to find out what place he was talking about but bohus fortress is a museum and not a prison. though i guess the mid 90s are now 15years ago

i also found that the fight was in a bar called spybar in stockholm. According to google maps, spybar and bohus fortress are 486km apart (301miles) they wouldnt drive him from sweden's east coast to the west coast for just a fight.
