Re: DR's Official MMA Thread
I agree but you have to admit its a bit dodgy considering how strict they usually are with making weight. Also is this not the sort of thing you should be told in advance and not just before the weigh in? didnt they put the weigh in back a hour as well! I dont really view this from the perspective of affecting the outcome of the fight. Im not sure he did anything in that fight to warrent a rematch. This is a issue of legitimacy in the sport.

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread
If GSP didn't make weight, it wouldn't be for the title... If anything they helped nick out to make sure it was a title fight. Nick and his camp weren't complaining about it so why should you? If you question the legitimacy of the sport then don't watch it. It's as simple as that. Stick to your boxing bro. |

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread
First off let me apologize for acting up. This is the first I heard of the .9 lbs loophole. After watching your video and catching up on the topic I found what the confusion was about. The guy said something like, If GSP/Diaz weigh in over weight they'll announce it as 170 and then they'll have an hour to cut the weight, but only if it's under 171. They just didn't want any messing around at the weigh in with the record crowd and the volatility of the matchup. They are allowed the hour generally, see Nate's last fight. To say this ruins the legitimacy of the sport is just retarded. Use logic and Diaz fans will scatter homie. |

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread
That shit didn't come directly from Nick, that came from one of his minions or Cesar. I think if Nick Diaz really thought it was an issue he would've said something himself in one of his post fight interviews with Rogan/Helwani or at the post fight presser, no? When have either of the Diaz brothers been afraid to ruffle feathers? GSP was drinking fluids right after he got the scale which means he couldn't have been more than a few ounces over weight. Best guess is he went right from the public weigh-in to the backstage scale with the commission. Once GSP had privacy from the crowds, he then dropped his shorts and hopped on the scale butt ass naked and made weight no problem. |

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread
The whole thing is strange, weigh ins for title fights are usually the strictest (could be made non title, fighter gives up percentage of purse ect). Now this 'rule' did not apply to any of the other fighters on the card. Areil helwani stated he was told it only applies to main events yet condit has come out and said he was told nothing of this rule when he headlined in Canada.

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread
It's strange but given the circumstances surrounding the two fighters and the amount hype that fight had could you imagine what would've happened if they had said GSP is 170.5 lbs and has not made weight. You would have had a room full of Canucks hyperventilating because the fight everyone has been waiting for might be off or might become a non title bout. Then add a hyped up Nick Diaz after the square off to a room full of pissed off, worried Canadians and make them all wait around for up to an hour so GSP can drop half a pound? Fuck that! That would not have been good, it would've taken one jackass throwing a single piece of ice or whatever and all hell breaks loose. A potential riot breaking out at the weigh-ins before 158 is way worse than letting GSP make the official weight after everyone is gone. Tell the Diaz camp ahead of time, let them square off, separate Diaz/GSP as fast you can, keep the masses controlled as much as you can and worry about the half a pound in a controlled environment. |

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread
I agree and understand to a extent. To me this isn't really about Diaz or GSP it just seem unprofessional and illegitimate in a sport that to a degree still struggles to get mainstream acceptance. What's more its unfair given how strict they appear at other times. I can just see ESPN doing another hour special on this and the whole TRT thing |
