Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

Pride fc never tested their fighters plus half their fights were fixed. Not a very reputable organization imo. Cro cop went 4-6 in the ufc being ko'd by sub par mma strikers.

Something shady about how they do business in Japan.
come on man HALF!!!!! you know thats bull shit. There were a handfull of fixed fights and none with any meaning, there were a few fixed fights in the UFC as well lets not forget. I dont ever remember anyone getting fucked over by dodgy judging in pride but we could list our top 100 in the UFC.

As for the steroid thing its different to a UFC fighter using it as it was not illegal or against the rules. If a fighter on steroids fights another fighter on steriods you cant really complain. From 1999 to 2006 Pride had the best and was the best MMA had to offer.

shortly after i stopped watching and shortly before i started watching again.

mma reminds me a bit of other sports, when it becomes too popular n competitive the stand out greats seem to disappear as everyone becomes a lot more balanced. i guess it is both good and bad for the sport.

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

anyone been following thwe controversy over the weight issue for the gsp/diaz fight?

Having watched and worked on a number of shows regulated by Quebec-based athletic commissions, I can’t say that I have a whole lot of regard for how combat sports are overseen in that province. I’ve personally witnessed incidents of apathy, arrogance and gross referee incompetence that hurt the fighters and the sport of MMA, destroying won/lost records and even jeopardizing lives.

With that in mind, I have to say that I’m only mildly surprised by this video of what appears to be UFC Assistant General Counsel/VP of Business and Legal Affairs Michael Mersch discussing with Nick Diaz the then-upcoming weigh-in for the GSP vs. Diaz title fight at UFC 158 in Montreal’s Bell Centre.

Although the audio is difficult to understand at times, Mr. Mersch can clearly be heard stating that the Montreal Athletic Commission had decided to allow both GSP and Diaz an hour longer to weigh in than any other fighters on the show, and that although welterweight title fights are supposed to adhere to a rigid 170 pound limit, GSP and Diaz would be allowed to weigh as heavy as 170.9.

For a fight featuring the sport’s most marketable fighter battling in his own hometown, this positively REEKS of apparent corruption.

Even for the Montreal commission, this is unbelievable. What exactly was going on here? Why was this backroom deal cut, and why was it apparently done without Diaz’ knowledge until the very last minute? Was GSP having trouble making weight? Was this an attempt to force Diaz to be drained by the brutal weight-cutting process for as long as possible before the playing field was deliberately skewed to benefit GSP?

The bottom line is that, in an arrangement that Mr. Mersch clearly identified as being “off the record”, two fighters were given special exemptions from the rules, with at least one of those fighters apparently not even being informed or consulted before said exemptions were enacted.

It’s going to be hard, if not impossible, for UFC to wash off the stink of this one. After UFC president Dana White’s openly-stated disdain for having to deal with Diaz, and with GSP being a mega-million dollar cash cow for both the UFC and the City of Montreal, I can’t see how the promotion and the commission are going to get out of this without a major black eye. In the end, it’s solely the commission’s responsibility to ensure that this kind of thing never happens, but rightly or wrongly, the UFC is going to be caught in the blast radius with them.

It appears that MMA has now forfeited the right to point a finger at the corruption in professional boxing ever again.

UPDATE: It appears that the video shot by one of Nick Diaz’ corner crew is in violation of UFC copyright laws, and as you can see when you click the link, it has been stricken from YouTube.

UPDATE #2: Looks like it’s back up again, at least for now.
