FBI Records on the Montana Freemen Investigation

The Montana Freemen were an anti-government extremist group involved in the mid-1990s standoff and related investigations in Montana. These FBI records show the Salt Lake City office pursuing intelligence, physical surveillance, an undercover operation, and a proposed court-authorized MISUR installation in 1995. The documents refer to discussions of common-law ideology, fraudulent financial instruments, meetings in Billings and at the Brusett, Montana ranch property, and a threat case involving U.S. District Judge Jack Dale Shanstrom. They also reference Title III coverage and coordination with FBI Headquarters, the National Security Division, and the Terroristic Incident Response Group.
